Engineering/Technical Project Manager

Overview

An effective Project Manager is essential to the success of product development in the Engineering Department. They are responsible for organizing, guiding, and delivering cross-functional project work—including hardware, software, and QA—to achieve product and business objectives. The PM must clearly understand company strategy and translate high-level goals into actionable, measurable outcomes for the development teams.

This person will serve as a connector —ensuring that technical teams, stakeholders, and leadership are aligned, risks are surfaced early, and that the team is always working on the right priorities at the right time. They will bring technical fluency, strategic communication, adaptability , and a coaching mindset to complement our strong project management team.

Internally the role will be referred to as Project manager III. 

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree. Preferably in process-oriented discipline (i.e. Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration) or 6-10 years of direct experience in technical project management.
• 5-10 years of experience working on Agile Development teams. Preferably as a project manager, product owner or scrum master.
• Strong technical acumen. Able to understand dependencies across embedded systems, UI, and QA. Map risks and ask clarifying questions of tech leads and team members. You can't be buffaloed
• Proven ability to manage complex, cross-discipline projects and communicate clearly with both engineers and stakeholders.

• Technical fluency – Understand technical concepts and architecture well enough to anticipate impediments, map dependencies, and have informed conversations with engineers and QA
• Strategic Communicator – Can align teams and stakeholders around project goals, risks and tradeoff negotiations diplomatically
• Navigates Ambiguity – comfortable leading early phase or research-heavy project where not everything is defined yet. Can build momentum and focus even when direction isn't crystal clear.
• Outcome Oriented – focuses on delivering business value, not just closing tickets. Help get the “why” before the “how”
• Resilient and Adaptable – Can handle shifting priorities, technical challenges and stakeholder feedback while maintaining team focus and morale

Success Milestones

First 90 Days

• Lead backlog refinement for at least one development team; ensure work is clear, testable, and aligned with business needs.
• Break down user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria that map to stakeholder goals.
• Participate in sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives to build team trust and context.
• Begin building rapport with developers, testers, and cross-discipline leads (Product, QA, Specialty Managers).
• Possess a working understanding of Wavetronix product lines and key technical constraints.
• Demonstrate ownership over team progress and proactive follow-up on risks and questions.

Focus: Establish foundational relationships, earn trust, and demonstrate tactical project ownership.

First 6 Months

Focus: Drive alignment across teams, add structure to complexity, and build credibility as a cross-functional leader.

• Partner with stakeholders to validate direction, clarify desired outcomes, and refine roadmaps.
• Coordinate across product, project teams and QA to sequence work and uncover dependencies.
• Proactively communicate risks and timeline shifts with recommendations—not just status.
• Begin contributing to cross-team planning and release strategies alongside other PMs.
• Provide mentorship to junior PMs or project coordinators by sharing artifacts, templates, or informal guidance.
• Demonstrate the ability to lead through ambiguity by structuring loosely defined projects into executable plans.

First Year

Focus: Deliver value across the full lifecycle, refining processes, and serving as a team multiplier.

• Help shape system-level user requirements in collaboration with Product and Engineering leads.
• Own long- and short-term project plans that reflect both business goals and engineering realities.
• Confidently answer questions about vision, priorities, and business outcomes to unblock teams.
• Participate in architectural planning discussions with the System Engineering team, asking relevant business-aligned questions.
• Possess a confident understanding of Wavetronix product architecture and technology stack.
• Act as a trusted communicator between engineering and stakeholders.
• Elevate the quality of project execution by coaching others in prioritization, communication, and follow-through.

Beyond Year One

Focus: Lead strategic decisions, mentor others, and contribute to the maturity of the project management discipline.

• Take a lead role in coordinating multi-team initiatives or high-risk cross-functional programs.
• Actively support professional development and onboarding of new PMs through the Project Management circle
• Help standardize best practices across teams while respecting context-specific flexibility.
• Possess a clear understanding of the ITS and traffic industry to anticipate customer and market shifts.
